Litigation Practice

For first 15 years, Mr. King practiced primarily as a general litigator and was counsel of record in more than twenty reported appellate court decisions involving such diverse areas of the law as banking, real estate, employment and divorce.

He continues to litigate real estate matters, recently obtaining a decision from the Massachusetts Appeals Court establishing his client's rights to an unrecorded easement across abutting property.
Land Use Practice

For the most recent 25 years, Mr. King has concentrated practice in representing parties before municipal and state boards, commissions and agencies regarding land use permits, both zoning and environmental.

He has appeared before local planning boards, zoning boards and conservation commissions in more than thirty municipalities in Greater Boston, representing the interests of both applicants and abutting property owners.
Commercial and Educational Developments

He has been instrumental in obtaining permits for commercial properties ranging from the expansion of regional shopping malls to the renovation of smaller suburban plazas, for business ranging from scrap metal dealers to research facilities developing state of the art pharmaceuticals, and for educational institutions in suburban communities as well as within the City of Boston.

Residential Developments

Early in career he successfully defended in court one of the first comprehensive permits for affordable housing issued by a municipality in Essex County pursuant to Chapter 40B.

More recently he has represented applicants for affordable housing projects in his home town of Marblehead.

He has assisted a “for profit” client redevelop an abandoned church property for residential uses, preserving exterior of the historic building.

He also assists owners and developers obtain local land use permits and approvals for new or expanded and renovated single family homes.

Environmental Approvals

He has successfully obtained (and then defended) Orders of Condition from local conservation commissions and obtained Superseding Orders of Condition from the State Department of Environmental Protection for both commercial and residential projects including projects located partially within wetland resource areas and areas of critical environmental concern.
Historic Properties

He resolved a church's dispute with neighbors, allowing the completion of a new fellowship hall within a sensitive historic district.

On a pro bono basis he assisted historical commissions and preservation trusts in two communities in preserving historic buildings.
Community Activities

He is a guest lecturer on land use issues at MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning.

He served as chairman of the Marblehead Zoning Board of Appeals.

He also served on the Property Law Section Council of the Massachusetts Bar Association and has submitted two amicus curiae briefs on land use issues to the Supreme Judicial Court on behalf of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Planning Association.

He is currently a member of the Saugus River Watershed Council. At its 2008 annual meeting the Council presented him the River Stewardship Award for his contributions toward protecting and restoring the natural resources of the watershed.

Accessibility Laws

He has extensive experience with both State and Federal access laws for the disabled, having assisted owners in the hospitality and retail industries and developers of multifamily residential properties comply with current regulations and to resolve claims where they have not.
